2023 : I Will Not Support Anyone That Is Older Than Me — Umahi

0
Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State, weekend, stated that he will not support anyone that is above his age limit for the 2023 governorship election in the State.

According to him, there are several benefits of having a young and vibrant person as the Governor of the State.
The Governor stated this when he received members of the State Executive Council led by his Deputy Governor, Barr. Kelechi Igwe at his country home in Uburu, Ohaozara local government area during the yuletide.
Governor Umahi appreciated the EXCO members whom he described as his team while urging them to work in unity in 2020 as no good work comes without a reward.
He added that in 2020, every EXCO member must present one person for business empowerment.
“I will not support anyone that is older than me for Governor come 2023. We need someone that is energetic and ready to lead with every commitment.
“I will not engage in 2023 politics now, I can only talk politics a year to the end of my tenure not now. We are more concerned to develop the state and cannot be distracted by desperate people who are hungry for power and not for the betterment of the people”.
Umahi further noted that he cannot be distracted by desperate people who are hungry for power and not for the betterment of the people.
While speaking on behalf of the EXCO members, the deputy Governor aligned himself with the proclamation of the Former Deputy Governor of old Imo State, Francis Orji, urging other Governors to come for a tutorial on good governance under the Ebonyi State Governor.

They prayed the Governor not to relent in his avowed commitment in ensuring that Ebonyi sustains it’s lead among the top developing states in the country.

Advise Us When We Are Wrong: Lawan Begs Nigerians

0
Senate President Ahmad Lawan has asked Nigerians to advise and guide the national assembly where they are wrong.
The Senate President made the appeal at a reception where he was honoured alongside Abubakar Aliyu, minister of state for works and housing, in Damaturu, Yobe state capital, on Saturday.
He said: “I want to use this opportunity to appeal to Nigerians to continue to support us in the National Assembly; to advise us and to guide us where we are wrong or where we are about to be wrong.”
Lawan also promised to run a senate that is non-partisan and do everything in the interest of Nigerians.
“I can take it upon myself to run a non-partisan senate, where the party does not determine what we do. What we do could be determined by the interest of Nigeria,” he said.
“Every Nigerian, regardless of his political party, wants to see an economy that works and also wants to live in peace.”

Electricity: Nigerian Senate makes case for nuclear energy

0
As the federal government of Nigeria presses on with its plan to diversify the nation's energy mix - with inclusion of nuclear energy technology from Russia, the Nigerian Senate has also called for the inclusion of nuclear power into the country’s energy mix. This was part of the resolution reached by the upper chamber recently following a motion by Senator Tanko Al-Makura representing Nassarawa South senatorial district. The Senate noted that the primary sources of energy for the production of electricity in Nigeria includes gas, hydro, oil and coal, with current power generation capacity of 7000 mega Watts. The lawmakers noted that experts using modern energy modeling tools had estimated that for the Nigerian economy to grow at the rate of 10 percent, the country’s electricity requirement by 2020 will need to reach 30,000MW, and by 2030 it will be 78,000MW. The red chamber agreed with the notion that nuclear energy is one of cleanest and safest source of energy in the world today and nuclear power generation does not produce greenhouse gases. The lawmakers also hinted that they are aware that in 2006, Nigeria ratified critical treaties with International Atomic Energy agency (IAEA) Vienna Austria, with the aim of enabling Nigeria access nuclear power into the country’s energy mix. Recalling that the Nigeria and Russian Federation signed bilateral agreements on nuclear energy cooperation, the Senate pointed out that the recent visit by President Muhammadu to Russia was a move in the right direction to stimulate implementation. PAY ATTENTION: Install our latest app for Android and read best news on Nigeria’s #1 news app Worried that power outages in Nigeria have constituted the major constraint to the development of the manufacturing sector and negatively affect the cost of running business in Nigeria and ultimately the economy of the country, the Senate opined that unless the energy mix in Nigeria is broadened to include nuclear energy, the persistent power outages being experienced by the country will not be easy to address. Accordingly the upper legislative chamber resolved to:
 1. Urge the federal government to reposition the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority to enable it to carry out its mandate of ensuring safety, security safeguards and physical protection of nuclear materials including hazardous waste in Nigeria.
2. Urge the federal government to re-engineer, refocus and recognize the Nigerian Atomic Energy Commission with the mandate to ensure timely contacts and negotiations with nuclear vendors for construction of nuclear power plants with time line.
3. Urge the federal government to expedite action on the Nuclear Safety, Security and Safeguards Bill currently with the Senate; and
4. Pass into law all treaties and protocols on nuclear energy as ratified by Nigeria. Recall that in 2017, Russia's state-owned nuclear energy corporation, osatom and Nigeria signed agreements for the construction and operation of nuclear power plants and nuclear research centre in Nigeria. Last month, African countries were advised to embrace nuclear research and energy to empower and grow their economies. The advice was given at the African Nuclear Business Platform conference that took place on Tuesday, 15 and Wednesday, October 16 October in Nairobi, Kenya. The conference gathered over 150 energy and nuclear professionals from across the globe.
